Official name: YAL-1A Airborne Laser.
Manufactured: Boeing (USA).
Type: Laser anti-missile defense aircraft.
Propulsion: 4 GE CFM 60-80C2 turbofan engines. Each engine producing more than 60,000 lbs of thrust a piece.
Cruising speed: 584 mph.
Range: almost 10,000 miles.
Empty weight: 289,100 lbs.
Maximum takeoff weight: 871,500 lbs.
Wingspan: 211.4 ft.
Length: 231.95 ft.
Height: 63.7 ft.
Wing area: 5,825 sq.ft.
Weaponry: Oxygen iodine laser able to fire 20 rounds, weighing in at 178,574 lbs.
Development Status: Original prototype flew for the first time on July 18, 2002. The Air Force plans to field seven airborne lasers.
Analysis: Frame build around a modified 747, but other platforms such as the C-17 have been explored.
