Season 1 episode 5 of History Channel's “Dogfights” is entitled “Hell Over Hanoi.” It re-enacts the actual battle of Air Force pilots Dan Cherry, Fred Olmsted,and ace pilot Steve Ritchie during the height of the Vietnam war. They pit their F-4 Phantom against a North Vietnamese MiG-21. The huge size, heavy armament, and revolutionary avionics of the F-4 paved the way for modern planes like the F-15 and stealth F-22. The F-4 was the first American plane to service all branches of the military, a trend adopted by the future F-35 deployment.
