“The Last Gunfighter” first aired in season one, episode seven of History's “Dogfights.” The show dissects the tactics of American pilots Richard Schaffert, Paul Speer, and Phil Wood who fly the US Navy F-8 Crusader in escort of a pair of A-4 Skyhawks. They encounter Vietnamese MiG-17s and must defend their package. The A-4 is the  American strike fighter famously flown by John McCain. The F-8 is a heavy fighter with characteristics that helped to inspire the F-18 and eventual Super Hornet, Growler, and F-35C.
